The birria taco renaissance has taken a strong-hold on the United States in recent months. Originating in the Mexican state of Jaliscom, birria is traditionally made as a savory, chile-laden stew using goat meat. However, birria eventually traveled north to Tijuana, becoming a well-known street taco enjoyed by locals and travelers alike. Soon enough, birria made its way to Los Angeles, and in no time, the craze spread throughout the U.S.
To create a quesabirria taco, the tortilla is dipped in birria broth and griddled, before it’s topped with meat and cheese, and folded into the now crunchy tortilla. It’s pure comfort food that is served with a side of consommé, or birria broth, for dipping. While the food trend is not as prevalent in Atlanta as in other cities, several Atlanta-area establishments and pop-ups feature birria tacos, mostly made with beef, on their menus. Here are a few to check out around town:
DMT – 479 Flat Shoals Avenue SE, Atlanta, Georgia 30316
Owned and operated by Daniela Guevara and Marco Saldierna, DMT Tacos pops up weekly at We Suki Suki: Global Grub Collective in East Atlanta Village and Boggs Social and Supply in West End. Their taco de birria is made with braised beef, which is served on a corn tortilla with onion, cilantro, and avocado salsa. Other birria and quesabirria menu items include mulitas and tortas – just don’t forget to add your side of consommé for dipping! And, it doesn’t stop at birria. DMT also serves up pork, chicken, steak, battered shrimp, and even squash tacos! Just get your order in quickly because they are known to sell out.
Frida’s Taqueria – 5514 Lawrenceville Highway, Suite A, Lilburn, Georgia 30047
Located in Lilburn, Frida’s Taqueria opened nearly two years ago, offering everything on their expansive menu, from gorditas and empanadas to flautas. For those looking for birria specifically, of course, the ATL hotspot serves both a birria quesadilla and three birria taco plate, and both come served with a side of consommé for dipping. The list of available meats and fish at Frida’s is seemingly endless and includes chorizo, lengua, and chicharron! Add some queso or guac with chips, and you’ll be good to go for your evening meal!
Tacos La Villa – 2415 Cobb Parkway SE, Smyrna, Georgia 30080
With locations in Smyrna and Kennesaw, Tacos La Villa offers birria tacos, quesabirria tacos, and even pizzabirria on their menu. And, trust us— the latter is a pure, cheesy indulgence! All three selections come with a side of consommé. This hidden gem leaves the pretentiousness at the door with its simple yet delicious menu, which also includes chimichangas, burritos, and fajitas, among other authentic Mexican food staples. What makes Tacos La Villa stand out from the rest is its dedication to using only the freshest ingredients around, so that every dish is able to shine brightly!
